SO CLOSE YOU CAN ALMOST TASTE IT - PART III

With our first full Saturday of College Football Games rapidly approaching, we are going to break these down by time slot, as there are a lot of games on the slate. Up first, the Noon to 3:30 Games.

(All times are listed in EST)

Miami (Ohio) @ Florida
Noon - ESPN
Florida breaks in a ton of new players, most notably John Brantley. With Tebow gone to the NFL and Charlie Strong now coaching at Louisville, the Gators enter the 2010 season without their leading passer, rusher, and receiver. But today the running back trio of Jeff Demps, Emmanuel Moody, and Chris Rainey should put up some monster yards today. The Gators D should be very stout led by Senior Safety Ahmad Black, and Will Hill. Look for Florida to roll up Miami (Ohio) and win by 38.

Western Michigan @ Michigan State
Noon - ESPN2
Michigan State at home should be able to win by 24 points. The last time these two met (11/7/2009) Michigan State won 49-14, so expect to see Sparty roll it up. Keep an eye on star linebacker, Greg Jones. He's a tackling machine, and by the end of the day Western Michigan will want no more. Sparty will be tuning up for the Florida Atlantic showdown where they'll be facing Howard Schnellenberger on Sept 11th. A game that could be trickier than MSU fans are letting on.

Louisiana-Lafayette @ Georgia
Noon - ESPN3.com
Georgia is breaking in a new quarterback in Aaron Murray. With two talented running backs, All-American wide receiver, A.J. Green, and a full house at Offensive Line, they should be OK. All eyes will be on the QB play, and the new defense, led by star Justin Houston, which I expect to bring a base package to the table as they prepare for South Carolina and the SEC East Sept 11th showdown in Columbia. If the Dawgs can cut out the penalties and up the takeaways for the a much improved team in 2010. Dawgs win by 27.

UPDATE: (9/2/2010) Washaun Ealey thought it would be a good idea to drive around last week on a suspended license. Long story short it was late and he hit a car, and decided to do what runners do - left the scene. Coach Richt is very displeased with his actions, and said Ealey will be missing the opener.

Illinois vs Missouri
12:30 PM - FSN
This season opening rivalry game will be played in the Dome in St. Louis, Missouri.Blaine Gabbert is a heck of a quarterback. He posted at 140.45 QB rating with 3,593 yards and 24 TD's last year. If Gabbert can stay healthy he has a great shot at being the Big 12 QB of the Year. The Illinois secondary will have a tough time keeping it together, even though corner back Terry Hawthorne is one of the best in the Big Ten. Mizzou wins by 10 as the Tigers' defense, led by (DE) Aldon Smith, keeps it tight.

UPDATE: (9/2/2010) Derrick Washington has been permanently suspending from the University of Missouri Football Team. Big shoes to fill, as he was an integral part of the offense. Tigers by 3.

Colorado vs Colorado State
2:00 PM - MTN
Coach Hawkins in on the hot seat, but the Buffaloes can't afford a new coach. So more of the same in Boulder. This game is a 2 PM kickoff in Denver for the season opening rivalry game, and it looks like the trio of Tyler Hansen (QB), Steward (RB) and Scotty McKnight (WR) should handle the Rams D. Colorado should win by 10. But if the Buffaloes throw too many times over in the direction of CSU's Mychal Sisson (CB) then this could turn around quickly.

We'll break down the 3:30 - 6:30 games on Friday, and the 7:00 - 11:00 PM games on Sunday. And starting next on Monday we'll have the Sunday September 5th and Labor Day game breakdowns.
